Attic Undercroft House reimagines the Queensland cottage typology of roof, middle and undercroft. Many local childhood memories form in attics and undercrofts. To create memorable spaces, the house was imagined as only an undercroft and attic.
In the undercroft, a series of concrete platforms and a timber deck form the living spaces. Like typical undercrofts in Queenslanders, columns are concrete, the ‘ceiling’ is exposed floor structure, and the exterior is lined in rough sawn battens. Steel framed glazing provides an extremely fine frame thickness allowing a closer connection to the landscape.
Upstairs, bedrooms sit within the attic. Timber trusses cross the space, infilled with weaving, informal partitions. Perforated screens act as insect screens, balustrades and a rain screen, keeping the upper levels open. The attic is a space of solitude and a place to dream.
